Just getting started?

Welcome to my free on-line tutorials! It is early days yet for this project but it is my aim to have a fairly comprehensive range of tutorials and articles that will cover everything from the absolute basics to the trickier technical stuff. I have a long list that I want to write up, but if there’s anything missing that you want to read about sooner rather than later then let me know and I’ll bump it up the waiting list!

It can be a bewildering world to enter for the first time but one of the wonderful things about photography is that it’s only as difficult as you want it to be: there is no reason that you can’t start taking good photographs pretty much from the first time you pick up your camera provided you concentrate on the right things.

If you pay a little attention to the fundamentals then it will improve your photography exponentially. Conversely, if you try to get too technical before you’ve got the basics well and truly nailed down you can find that you’re working against yourself. With that in mind, I’ve put together a list of links to some articles and tutorials that I think will be particularly useful for those of you that are just starting out.

Things like composition techniques and basic image selection cost you no money, require no special equipment and are simple enough techniques that you can start getting good results straight away without taxing yourself too much. The basics of exposure are perhaps slightly more technical but really not as difficult to grasp as you might think. And they are worth the effort: believe me when I say that if you do not get a good grasp of the fundamentals now then it doesn’t matter how much time you invest on the heavy-duty geek stuff later, your photography will never reach its full potential.

Now, pick a link and get yourself started! And remember: there’s no reason that this shouldn’t be a two way process. If you have any questions, feel free to post them in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them as quickly as I can.
